What is hypnosis? Hypnosis Q & A

Hypnosis is a natural, relaxed yet focused state of mind.  This is what might be referred to as being in the ‘flow’ or the ‘zone’.  You are completely aware of what is going on around you but you choose to concentrate on the voice of the hypnotist. It feels very similar to the sensations when you are in between a state of sleep and wakefulness.  All hypnosis is self-hypnosis; you decide to work with the hypnotist to guide you into this profoundly powerful state.

Can you make me do something I don’t want to?

You are in control and can stop the session at any time.  Since you are in charge, you are just as able to not answer a question when hypnotized as you are when you are not hypnotized.  Together, we develop a plan so you may achieve your goals.  You are able to accept or reject any suggestion offered by the hypnotist, even if it is something you specifically added during the planning interview.  Your success is up to you, not the hypnotist.

Will I cluck like a chicken every time I hear the word corn?

No, not unless that is a goal you would like help achieving.  Hollywood and stage hypnotists have created a meme that this great state of mind is highly dramatic.  When employed as a technique for self-improvement rather than entertainment, it is a powerful tool to help ordinary people achieve every day goals.

Can I get stuck?

No.  You are not crawling through tunnels or spelunking 😉  You are resting, while fully clothed and comfortable on a massage table or in a chair during the session. You will emerge from the session quickly and easily being fully alert and enthusiastic about achieving your goals.  Remember that you are always in control and choose only to follow the suggestions that you accept.

What can hypnosis help with?

This is an easy one – everything!  Seriously, everything from tobacco cessation, nail biting, sports performance, and study habits.  Hypnosis is a technique to help you move beyond fears and limiting thoughts.  Hypnosis is also a potent pain management tool that can be easily combined with other therapies.
